Thank you for this great feedback! We now support GitHub container registry for both public and private images. Please check out our documents pages for more information:
https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/app-platform/how-to/deploy-from-container-images/
If you need any help implementing this, please reach out to our support team: https://cloudsupport.digitalocean.com/s/ Again, thank you for taking time out of your day to let us know how important this is, so that we can tailor our product roadmap to what people really need.

This feature is already implemented as of 2024

My CI is building the image, I don't understand why I should redo it in DO.

I second this. We have prebuilt Docker images published to GitHub Containers and we have to re-build them on DigitalOcean for no real reason (and consume minutes for doing so)

Digital Ocean container registry pricing which jumps to $5 when more than one image loaded (which is necessary when loading a new image) is unreasonable. Competitors charge for this would be a fraction.
Workaround of upgrading before upload and downgrading after empty garbage is a wate of developer time.
Loading from GitHub would be much more convenient.

Tarrek (Product Manager): Any news on this? It was a huge downer when I found out that ghcr is not supported.

This needs to be implemented ASAP. There's already existing support for plugging in other container registries for DockerHub.
The most likely reason this hasn't been implemented yet is that DigitalOcean knows they can't compete with GitHub's container registry pricing, but they can with Docker's.
It's very anti-consumer and annoyingly obvious behavior.

+1 this

I would love to see this implemented with other private registries like gitlab

I second this request. It would be a huge improvement to be able to re-use the github (or any other compatible) registry.
